Controversy over NATO air strike in Afghanistan

An investigation is under way after a NATO air strike on fuel tankers hijacked by the Taliban killed scores in northern Afghanistan. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Sunday she would "deeply regret" if any civilian lives were lost in the air strike in Kunduz on September 4, which was ordered by a German military commander.Duration: 01:07

Soviet victory at Stalingrad

Battle of Stalingrad http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Stalingrad The Battle of Stalingrad was a major battle of World War II in which Nazi Germany and its allies fought the Soviet Union for control of the city of Stalingrad (now Volgograd) in southwestern Russia. It took place between 17 July 1942 and 2 February 1943. The battle is considered by many historians to be the turning point of World War II in Europe, comparable to the way the Battle of Midway is considered to be the turning point of the Pacific War. The battle involved more participants than any other on the Eastern Front, and was marked by its brutality and disregard for military and civilian casualties by both sides. It was amongst the bloodiest in the history of warfare, with the upper estimates of combined casualties coming to nearly two million. The German offensive to capture Stalingrad proceeded rapidly in the late summer of 1942, supported by Luftwaffe bombing which reduced much of the city to rubble. However, the German offensive bogged down in house-to-house fighting; despite controlling over 90% of the city at times, the Wehrmacht was unable to dislodge the last Soviet defenders, who clung tenaciously to the west bank of the Volga River as the weather turned rainy and cold. In November 1942, the Red Army launched Operation Uranus, a two-pronged attack on the exposed flanks of the German 6th Army in Stalingrad. This operation dramatically turned the tables, as the weakly held German flanks collapsed and the German 6th Army was cut off and surrounded inside Stalingrad. As the Russian winter set in, the 6th Army weakened rapidly from cold, starvation and ongoing Soviet attacks, but command ambiguity coupled with Adolf Hitler's resolute belief in the "power of the will" and the value of standing fast prevented it from breaking out. During December, a German attempt to break the encirclement failed, and subsequently all attempts at supply collapsed. By early February 1943, German resistance in Stalingrad had ceased, and the surrounded 6th Army had been destroyed.

D-Day To Germany Rare Color Movies of Normandy Invasion WWII

In 1944 Jack H. Lieb, was one of several journalists who followed the Allied advance across Europe after the Normandy invasion. Working for the newsreel News of the Day, he also shot silent COLOR footage of the Landing on Utah Beach and the Liberation of Paris with his own 16mm hand held camera. He was also my Grandfather! By this time in his career his work as a Newsreel Cameraman already included Charles Lindbergh's daring flight to Paris in 1927, the Revolution in Nicaragua, the Great Ohio and Mississippi floods of 1937 plus two and a half years covering South, East and Central Africa in the early 1930's. Take a journey with Jack Lieb from London, across the English Channel to the beaches of Normandy then onwards into Paris on the day of Liberation. Mr. Lieb's commentary in his own voice and these rare color films (which are now both contained in National Archives holdings), create a unique, personal recollection of that momentous time. Included is additional rare footage of the pre-invasion gathering of troops and preparations; plus personalities such as Ernie Pyle, Edward G. Robinson, Ernest Hemingway and (then General) Dwight D. Eisenhower, as well as the massive celebrations after the liberation of Paris leading towards the end of World War II! 46 Minutes. Color & Black & White. NOT RATED/WILL PLAY ALL REGIONS. First USAAF Raid over Germany: unedited crew interviews

Wednesday, January 27, 1943: The first USAAF raid over a German target is carried out. A total of 55 American bombers raid Wilhelmshaven, losing 3 bombers and claiming 22 German planes shot down. This clip contains the unedited crew interviews following the raid. Notable is (then Colonel) Curtis Lemay referring the the raid as "rather dull". Also one Sergent uses the word "damn" during his description which is quickly re-shot and the Sergent looks at loss for words. I think this un-edited film provides a better perspective of aircrew character and personality than any other film I have seen.

The proud and powerfull Kaiser Wilhelm II is sure that his new Germany will be able to be as strong as the old rivals France and Tsardom Russia. His generals keep saying to him that they can't fail when going out to battle. However, the Belgians deliver tough resistance when the germans are marching trought their country and Great Britain hurries to meet the germans at the little city of Mons. This won't be an easy and deciding victory. From Mons to Marne, to the battles of the eastern front, a long and hard won terrific war is being fought. The fighting countries are battling all over europe. After a long and terrific stalemate, France is begging Great Britain to launch a great offensive, and beside the river of Somme one of the greatest battles in history is being developed.
