Incredible HD Footage of Japan Tsunami

I compiled some of the best quality footage from the Tsunami. TOKYO -- A ferocious tsunami spawned by one of the largest earthquakes on record slammed Japan's eastern coast Friday, killing hundreds of people as it swept away ships, cars and homes while widespread fires burned out of control. Hours later, the tsunami hit Hawaii but did not cause major damage. Warnings blanketed the Pacific, putting areas on alert as far away as South America, Canada, Alaska and the entire U.S. West coast. In northeastern Japan, the area around a nuclear power plant was evacuated after the reactor's cooling system failed. Police said 200 to 300 bodies were found in the northeastern coastal city of Sendai, the city in Miyagi prefecture, or state, closest to the epicenter. Another 110 were confirmed killed, with 350 people missing. Police also said 544 people were injured. The magnitude-8.9 offshore quake unleashed a 23-foot (seven-meter) tsunami and was followed for hours by more than 50 aftershocks, many of them of more than magnitude 6.0. Dozens of cities and villages along a 1,300-mile (2,100-kilometer) stretch of coastline were shaken by violent tremors that reached as far away as Tokyo, hundreds of miles (kilometers) from the epicenter. A large section of Kesennuma, a town of 70,000 people in Miyagi, burned furiously into the night with no apparent hope of being extinguished, public broadcaster NHK said. "The earthquake has caused major damage in broad areas in northern Japan," Prime Minister Naoto Kan said at a news conference.

New hydrogen blast at Fukushima nuclear reactor after Japan quake-tsunami

Follow latest updates at http://twitter.com/rt_com and http://www.facebook.com/RTnews To the latest developments in Japan now where there's been a second blast at the Fukushima nuclear plant. 11 people were injured in the explosion. The reactors are said to be intact at the moment. And officials claim there hasn't been a change in the radiation levels since the latest incident took place. At least 22 people have already been exposed to radiation - after an earlier explosion following Friday's devestating tremor and tsunami. Officials say the possibility of another blast is now unlikely. People within a 20km radius of the reactor have been evacuated to safety. There had been warnings of a three-metre high tsunami moving towards the northeast coast of Japan caused by a strong aftershock. We're now getting reports that the alert has been lifted. Prime Minister Naoto Kan has called it the worst crisis since World War II. RT's Ivor Bennett is in Sendai, one of the towns worst-affected by the huge wave.

2004 Deadly Asian Tsunami

The 2004 Asian Tsunami was caused by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, which was an undersea megathrust earthquake that occurred at 00:58:53 UTC on December 26, 2004, with an epicentre off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The quake itself is known by the scientific community as the Sumatra-Andaman earthquake. The resulting tsunami itself is given various names, including the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, Asian Tsunami, Indonesian Tsunami, and Boxing Day Tsunami. The earthquake was caused by subduction and triggered a series of devastating tsunamis along the coasts of most landmasses bordering the Indian Ocean, killing nearly 230,000 people in fourteen countries, and inundating coastal communities with waves up to 30 meters (100 feet) high. It was one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history. Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand were the hardest hit. With a magnitude of between 9.1 and 9.3, it is the second largest earthquake ever recorded on aseismograph. This earthquake had the longest duration of faulting ever observed, between 8.3 and 10 minutes. It caused the entire planet to vibrate as much as 1 cm (0.4 inches) and triggered other earthquakes as far away as Alaska. The plight of the many affected people and countries prompted a widespread humanitarian response. In all, the worldwide community donated more than $7 billion (2004 U.S. dollars) in humanitarian aid.

New dramatic video: Tsunami wave spills over seawall, smashes boats, cars

Follow latest updates at http://twitter.com/rt_com and http://www.facebook.com/RTnews Dramatic new pictures emerged on Sunday of a tsunami wave smashing into the Japanese town of Miyako, in Iwate Prefecture, on Friday. The wave crashes over the seawall carrying away everything in its path, including boats that topple over the wall and are smashed into a bridge. Cars were simply washed away, crashing into each other and buildings. More than 1,400 people were killed by the quake and resulting tsunamis and hundreds more were still missing, according to officials, but police in one of the worst-hit areas estimated the number of dead there alone could eventually top 10,000.

New Video of Challenger Disaster Surfaces After 24 Years

On a chilly January morning 24 years ago, Corydon optometrist Jack Moss raised his new video camera to the sky over central Florida and captured one of the darkest moments in American space exploration the explosion of the shuttle Challenger. In the videotape, a stream of white smoke behind the climbing shuttle shoots into view but Moss, his wife and a neighbor noticed immediately that More..something was amiss when the channel separated into two streams. Thats trouble of some kind, Moss can be heard saying. That didnt look right. Moments later, someone is heard telling Moss that the Challenger had blown up. From Louisville Courier Journal More info: The Florida man who filmed it from his front yard on his new Betamax camcorder turned the tape over to an educational organization a week before he died this past December. The Space Exploration Archive has since published the video into the public domain in time for the 24th anniversary of the catastrophe. Despite being shot from about 70 miles from Cape Canaveral, the shuttle and the explosion can be seen quite clearly. It is unclear why he never shared the footage with NASA or the media. NASA officials say they were not aware of the video, but are interested in examining it now that it has been made available. "High Flight" Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth and danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; sunward Ive climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds — and done a hundred things you have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung high in the sunlit silence. Hovring there, Ive chased the shouting wind along, and flung my eager craft through footless halls of air.... Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue Ive topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace — where never lark nor even eagle flew — and, while with silent lifting mind Ive trod the high untrespassed sanctity of space, put out my hand, and touched the face of God. ~John Gillespie Magee Jr.
