D-Day To Germany Rare Color Movies of Normandy Invasion WWII
In 1944 Jack H. Lieb, was one of several journalists who followed the Allied advance across Europe after the Normandy invasion. Working for the newsreel News of the Day, he also shot silent COLOR footage of the Landing on Utah Beach and the Liberation of Paris with his own 16mm hand held camera. He was also my Grandfather! By this time in his career his work as a Newsreel Cameraman already included Charles Lindbergh's daring flight to Paris in 1927, the Revolution in Nicaragua, the Great Ohio and Mississippi floods of 1937 plus two and a half years covering South, East and Central Africa in the early 1930's. Take a journey with Jack Lieb from London, across the English Channel to the beaches of Normandy then onwards into Paris on the day of Liberation. Mr. Lieb's commentary in his own voice and these rare color films (which are now both contained in National Archives holdings), create a unique, personal recollection of that momentous time. Included is additional rare footage of the pre-invasion gathering of troops and preparations; plus personalities such as Ernie Pyle, Edward G. Robinson, Ernest Hemingway and (then General) Dwight D. I made this short film some years ago and I constantly forgot to upload it... until now. The tune is the Funeral march by Frédéric Chopin, arranged for orchestra. The phrase of the Greek poet Horace, "Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori" ("It's sweet and honorable to die for the fatherland") is false and hollow, especially when civilians and innocents die by the thousands. All war is immoral. Point.

He has thrown the hymns of nuclear energy [brahmastra], and he does not know how to retract the glare. He has helplessly done this, being afraid of imminent death. PURPORT The brahmastra is similar to the modern nuclear weapon manipulated by atomic energy. The atomic energy works wholly on total combustibility, and so the brahmastra also acts. It creates an intolerable heat similar to atomic radiation, but the difference is that the atomic bomb is a gross type of nuclear weapon, whereas the brahmastra is a subtle type of weapon produced by chanting hymns. It is a different science, and in the days gone by such science was cultivated in the land of Bharata-varsa. The subtle science of chanting hymns is also material, but it has yet to be known by the modern material scientists. Subtle material science is not spiritual, but it has a direct relationship with the spiritual method, which is still subtler. A chanter of hymns knew how to apply the weapon as well as how to retract it. That was perfect knowledge. But the son of Dronacarya, who made use of this subtle science, did not know how to retract. He applied it, being afraid of his imminent death, and thus the practice was not only improper but also irreligious. As the son of a brahmana, he should not have made so many mistakes, and for such gross negligence of duty he was to be punished by the Lord Himself.

Some of them joined this party; some of them joined that party. Just like it actually happens when there is big war. Even nowadays, all the nations, they make a group. Some of them forming were forming one group; another some of them, they formed another group. Exactly the same thing was done. Now Krsna was the charioteer, but when the chariot was brought in front of the two soldiers' party, Arjuna became little bit disturbed that "I have to fight. On the other side they are my brothers, they are my nephews, they are my gurus, Dronacarya, and they are my grandfather, Bhismadeva. So what kind of fight this is that I have to fight with my friends and relatives and family members?" So he hesitated, that "Krsna, what kind of fight this is? They are not my enemies; they are all family members. So I am not interested in this fight." So he practically decided not to fight. And Krsna said that "What is this nonsense? You are a military man, and you have come to fight here, and you are My friend and My relative also, and if you decide not to fight, what people will say?" This is the beginning. Then, after some arguments, Arjuna thought it wise that "Actually, I am a military man and I have come to fight a decision that we shall fight. Now what I am trying to do, to avoid this fighting? Actually it is not my business. I am deviating from my duty." Therefore... (aside:) Find out this, karpanya-dosa. Find out. Pradyumna: karpanya-dosopahata-svabhavah prcchami tvam dharma-sammudha-cetah yac chreyah syan niscitam bruhi tan me sisyas te 'ham sadhi mam tvam prapannam Prabhupada: Translation. Pradyumna: "Now I am confused about my duty and have lost all composure because of weakness. In this condition I am asking You to tell me clearly what is best for me. Now I am Your disciple, and a soul surrendered unto You. Please instruct me." Prabhupada: Yes. So Arjuna understood his weakness, his weak point. Therefore he said to Krsna that karpanya-dosopahata-svabhavah. Karpanya, this word, comes from krpana. Krpana... Krpana, this word, is known practically everyone. Krpanata means miserly. A person who has got enough resources but if he does not use it properly, it is called, he is called a krpana, miser. And the opposite word of krpana is udhara, or liberal. So there are two words, krpana. So Arjuna said, karpanya-dosa: "I know I can fight. I am quite competent military person, but I am not using my resources; therefore it is karpanya-dosopahata-svabhavah." Svabhavah means naturally a military man, a ksatriya, is very bold enough to fight. That is one of the qualification of a military man. Yuddhe capalayanam. The saurya, virya, tejah, yuddhe capalayanam, these are the symptoms of ksatriya. He would never go away from fighting. When there is challenge, fighting, a ksatriya will never deny. Yuddhe capalayanam. So when ksatriya, is especially a ksatriya like Arjuna... He is the best military man of that age, and he was denying to fight. So he could understand his weakness. He said, karpanya-dosopahata-svabhavah: "Naturally I should fight, but on account of my crippled decision or miserly decision, I am perplexed." So Krsna... He knew Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. "Therefore I am surrendering unto You."
